I am the Dung Beetle
I am a Dung beetle and I am here to tell you the story of my life, I am born into a family of Dung Beetles that are surrounded by dung every waking moment and every sleeping moment. I am a little apprentice Dung Beetle now, I am learning from my parents the trade of the Dung Beetles, where we roll up the brown, sticky lumps of dung from the land of the gigantic smelly ox, to our home base were we will eat it as food and then bury the rest into the ground. The dung is quite stinky and as a young beetle, my mother says I have to learn to like it, because this is a job that I have signed up for, for a lifetime. At the comfort of my home my grandparents who have lived for a long long time told me a story once, one that I will never forget. He said ‘Your ancestors who lived way back in the old days…in the lands where the ground was all covered in sand…People there worshipped us…because of what we do…the way we roll dung day in and day out…From the shape of our bodies they create…magnificent gold pendants…they called us scarabs…they respected us…The glory of being a dung beetle lies there…remember that young one.’ This was the story that led me to believe that all dung beetles were superior and important creature, from then on I vowed to myself that I would be the most respected one out of them all.
There is no stopping nor turning back, I am now an adult Dung Beetle, the days and moths then years have passed by in a flash, I had quickly caught on with the trade of the family as a young apprentice I was before. Everyday under the hot and searing sun we scurry to the land of the ox were everything, the smells, the sights are multiplied by 10 times. The most hazardous part of this job is the fact that you might squashed any second, if you are not careful enough of the heavy trot of the ox, luckily this season there were no fatalities. The rest of the day we would be gathering the fresh dung from it’s place on the ground, and rolling them into easy compact balls of dung towards our home base. We scurry quickly to avoid the setting of the sun, we always arrive just before the sun fully sets and our predators come and take us.
As mating season begins I found my true love in one of the days that we went towards the ox land and retrieve the dung, the first moment when our 2 rolled up sphere like dung meet we knew we were made for each other.
It is now my turn to teach my kids the trade of the Dung Beetle, the years passed and now I am one of the oldest Beetles at the Home Base, my dream of being the most respected and superior Dung Beetle came true, at this age everyone compliments on the hard work that I have so carefully built up over the pass years. Now I may rest in peace, knowing that the Family trade has been passed down and doing as well as ever.
